During March 2009 the Community Center of St Bernard is running a
candy bar fundraiser. Proceeds from the candy bar sales will be used to pay for a CPA financial audit so that the Community Center will be eligible to apply for federal grants. "The audit will cost $5,500," explained Community Center Director Iray Nabatoff, "but it's very important. Last year the Community Center gave out 20,000 new Scholastic children’s books to local kids. After Hurricane Gustav, we distributed more than 3,700 Emergency Food Stamps applications. From January – December 2008, we served 7,684 free hot meals to area residents. More than 680 children received toys at our 2008 Toy GiveAway last December 21. And during 2008, our Food Pantry distributed 245,787 lbs of food to 2,230 low-income families." "We're very proud of what we've been able to do so far," adds Mr Nabatoff. "But offering these services to St Bernard residents costs money. We're asking the community to support us by buying candy bars to help us reach our fundraising goal so that we can apply for the grants we need to keep helping families here in St Bernard." The candy bars cost $1 each and there are 4 varieties to choose from: Caramel, Roast Almond, Crispy Rice, and Chocolate Truffle. Candy bars are on sale in the office at the Community Center of St Bernard, 1107 LeBeau St, Arabi. Business owners and groups who would like to order bulk amounts to sell at their locations should contact the Community Center at 504.281.2512 or info@ccstb.org.
