One of the natural wonders of the continent, the Mississippi River has a watershed of 1.2 million square miles, a length of more than 2,300 miles, a discharge rate of 600,000 cubic feet per second, and tributaries from 31 states and 2 provinces of Canada. But it is the character of the river as both a provider and destroyer that has shaped the folklore, music, literature, art, politics, and lives of the communities lining its banks. Join us in February 2008 for the 13th annual Williams Research Center Symposium, which will discuss the Mississippi and its role in establishing and defining New Orleans. This year’s symposium will feature talks by Jerry Enzler, Peter Kastor, Andrew McMichael, Andrew Walker, Jessica Dorman, Bruce B. Raeburn, and Craig E. Colten.
